Julia has more res thanks to her tome and more hp (38 and 37 compared to Sonya's 36 and 35), which means she is able to take more hits from these units and that in turn makes her the better magic tank. As you can see with the exception of Delthea (who can run LaD as well, in which case she is not an exception) every single blue mage that doubles Julia also doubles Sonya. This is the part why Julia and Naga is better than Sonya and Dark Excalibur. In the current meta however, I can't believe Sonya isn't above Julia, never mind below her, and this is coming from someone who pulled a Julia during their second week playing as their first mage and has been using her ever since. Julia has her strengths of course, (better dragon killing, though she still can't one-round Fae so it's actually somewhat limited) and the potential to still wall Reinhardt if he becomes even stronger somehow.
Not only does Sonya have a considerably better matchup versus pretty much every green mage, she has a consistently superior offensive phase due to her tome AND a slightly better defensive phase due to much fewer things doubling her. Gamepress then brings up the Hector matchup, but what bane are you running on your Julia? You don't want -res/-atk/-spd, that leaves -hp and -def, both of which die to a +atk Hector even at +0, considering that Hector is easily one of the most common enemies in the game, the idea that you would ever consider what's an incredibly shaky matchup at best as proof of Julia>Sonya is laughable (she doesn't even naturally double him for gods sake). (She survives +10 Reinhardt at +0 with Fort Res 1). She's capable of tanking an optimal Reinhardt unless the Reinhardt is 6 merges above her, assuming the Reinhardt is under hone and you don't run the Fort Res 1 seal for some ungodly reason. Sonya doesn't have this worry due to her tome effect and QP, making her capable of instantly one-shotting the likes of Soren/Nino/S!Elise, no hassle, no worry. In the current meta where every green mage runs G.Breaker (even occasional Ninos, it's superior to Desperation on defense), Julia being the slowest of them all makes her extremely vulnerable to green mages who will continue to double her. How is Sonya still below Julia, I'm so freaking triggered.
